Growing & using Sea Lavender

Close up of Sea Lavender flowers

The delicate blossoms of Limonium latifolium are like a soft purple haze. When the flower heads dry, the tiny purple flowers either fall off or close up very tightly. Dried Sea Lavender flowers make a wonderful filler for wreaths or other dried flower arrangements. To dry, pick when purple first starts to fade and put in a tall dry vase or hang upside down in bunches. Be sure to artfully arrange the flowers while fresh. After they dry, it is almost impossible to separate them.

Sea Lavender in full bloom

Sea Lavender leaves grow closely to the ground and can be quite large. While the leaves may spread out about a foot, the bouquet on top can get two to three feet in diameter. Crowding then will hamper the wide open and airy look they can provide in the landscape.

Sea Lavender with German Statice

Sea Lavender blooms at the same time the shorter, white German Statice blooms. With many of the same growing requirements, these are a natural to plant together. Make sure to plant the German Statice in front of the Sea Lavender with about two feet in between plants.

Sea Lavender Spilling Around the Garden

Sea Lavender makes a great addition to our Crafter’s Herb Garden Six Pack.

These plants are sometimes available in plug trays. These trays hold 128 of all the same plant. They are a great low cost way to fill a lot of space. Each cell is 3/4 of inch by an inch. Check here to see if Sea Lavender Plug Trays are available.
