Vegetable plants live fast. Since we only have a few months to grow our beloved veggies, we need to give them every advantage. The soil must be fertile and stresses, like lack of water or too much sun, need to be eliminated or at least buffered. If you are wondering what your soil is really like, we suggest a soil test. And, don't forget to fertilize! Because vegetables grow quickly they need consistent nutrient feed and as little stress as possible. We have picked a few products to help your Veggie season be the best ever! |

Season Starters are really little gems that help protect plants from light frosts. A series of tubes that are filled with water surround the plant and offer extra added warmth. Protects tender plants to 16 degrees. Plant early and harvest early. In addition to giving heat loving vegetables a head start, we have also used Season Starters as season extenders to take new plantings of marginal or fussy plants through their first winter. We had great success getting our Greek Bays established this way. $9.95 |

Row covers are light weight cloths that allow light, air and water to the plants, but not bugs or birds. This can be the most environmentally friendly method of pest control that you will ever use. You want to float this cover loosely over your plants so that, as the plants grow, your plants will have extra room to push up against the cover. We usually mound the edges with dirt or lay bricks around to hold the cover to the ground. It must not blow around or insects will get in. Harvest-Guard comes folded flat for easy storage. 5' by 25'. $10.95 |

Red mulch film was developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and has been shown to increase yields by 20 percent. The red light in the light spectrum has a an effect on the flowering and fruiting stage of the plant. The red plastic reflects the red light back onto the plant. Tomatoes grown with red mulch have bigger and heavier tomatoes. Since the goal for all vegetables is to have the best possible fruit, this mulch should benefit all vegetables and strawberries. We recommend pinning the edges of our Better Reds Mulch Film down with our Garden Pegs or some other device so that it does not fly about the plant. In addition to helping the plant to produce more, the plastic will also kill the weed seeds that germinate under it . 8 Pre-cut 3' by 3' sheets. $7.95 |

Don't forget the Garden Pegs! Such a simple tool that can make all the difference. These pegs are handy for keeping all kinds of landscape fabrics, row covers, plastics and paper mulches in place. If your mulch allows air underneath, then it won't be as efficient in maintaining moisture and keeping weeds out. Made of non-corrosive serrated plastic, these 4 1/2 inch long pegs are easy to use and can be reused over and over again. |
