Annual plants grow quickly and don't like to be kept in their starter pot too long. For this reason, we don't offer many annuals in three inch pots. However, since some of the nicest herbs and flowers are annuals, we offer these as certified organic seeds. And, with products like, the Germination Station our advanced lighting systems, getting a head start on seed sprouting is a snap. For potting soil, we recommend our Organic Gro Container Mix--a lightweight potting soil with fertilizer mixed in. Annuals grow quickly and benefit from extra topdressing and for this we offer a variety of Organic Fertilizers, including McGearys and Metanaturals.

| The Gourmet Greens
Seed 6-Pack includes: Red Giant Mustard Greens (Brassica juncea): The darker the vegetable the more vitamins it has (not to mention that it is prettier, too). This dark purple, green-ribbed leaf mustard is bursting with flavor and nutrition in each giant leaf (6 to 10 inches). To keep it growing as long as possible, harvest the outside leaves only. Italian Rustic Sylvetta Arugula (Diplotaxis muralis): This unique form of Arugula has a slightly sharper flavor than garden Arugula. It reseeds easily and can be perennial in zones 8-10. Arugula flowers have a nutty flavor and make a great garnish. Golden Purslane (Portulaca oleracea): Purslane is not widely used in the United States which is a real shame. It is the highest know plant source of Omega 3 fatty acids. In Asia it is highly prized as an addition to stir-fires. Try a handful with sautéed onions and tomatoes. Each plant covers about a square foot. Garden Sorrel (Rumex acetosa): If a green could be spring, sorrel would be the one. The tart lemony flavor of fresh young sorrel leaves is an experience not to be missed. Sorrel is a perennial which will reward you every spring with new lemony leaves. Older leaves may be dried and added to just about everything. To have a spring crop this year, start the seeds about 5 weeks before frost. Persian Garden Cress (Lepidium sativum): This early spring green adds peppery zest to salads and sandwiches. High in calcium, phosphate, iron, copper and Vitamins A and C, Persian Garden Cress is a must have green. Sow in the cool of spring and again in the fall. Huazontle--Red Aztec Spinach (Chenopodium berlandieri): Related to Epazote, this spinach is a heat lover with tender young leaves that can be eaten raw. Or, wait until the leaves mature and turn Dark Red and braise them with onions. |
