Organic Melon Plants

Hale's Best Jumbo Cantaloupe is an heirloom from the 1920's. It produces consistently with few problems. The orange flesh is very sweet and firm with melons weighing in between three and five pounds This melon is powdery mildew resistant.

Melons are a warm weather annual that should be planted out after danger of frost has passed. They like warm, very fertile soil. Since they are mostly water, keep them well hydrated. Too much rain or water can cause melons to be tasteless. Too little water will cause the melons to be small. Drip watering helps keep the leaves dry which, in humid climates, can develop powdery mildew.

Since the melons have both male and female flowers and since male flowers come on first, don't be alarmed if early flowers don't produce fruit.

As with all fruit pollinators are important. Plant lots of bee herbs nearby. These include thymes, rosemary, lavenders and many others.
