An unusual spiny Mediterranean shrub with beautiful white flowers. Quarter size round leaves form on trailing branches. Spicy flower buds can be eaten fresh or pickled. Small fruits resembling a tiny cucumber are also pickled.

A low yet wide spreading shrub to 6 ft. across. Its 1 in. crinkled leaves are gray-green and dense. Flowers 1.5 in. wide with yellow eyes. Good for ground or hillside cover.

CORDIOTHYMUS CAPITATUS (CONEHEAD THYME)

This slow growing mound bursts into tiny, spicy hot blooms in late summer. Along with Origanum maru and Satureja thymbra the middle eastern seasoning Zatar is made. Loaded with flavor!

CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS (LEMON GRASS)

The heart of the stalk, from just above the corm to just below the individual leaves, forms an Asian vegetable with distinctive spicy lemon flavor. Use leaves in tea or any dish needing lemon flavor.

ELETTARIA CARDAMOMUM (CARDAMOM)

The seeds are ground to make Cardamom powder. This plant is not seen often because outside the tropics it will not bloom or set seed, but the long shiny leaves are very fragrant. Houseplant.

EPILOBIUM CANA (GRAY CALIFORNIA FUCHSIA)

This California native blooms when other plants have given up for the season. It is an important hummingbird plant for just this reason. Can be invasive but easy to remove.

ERIGERON KARVINSKIANUS (FLEABANE, SANTA BARBARA DAISY)

1 in. incised leaves form along trailing stems. Dainty 1 in. flower heads are composed of numerous two-tone, threadlike rays. Its’ exploding form is striking in hanging locations. One of the first plants to bloom and the last to stop.

ERYSIMUM LINIFOLIUM (BOWLE'S MAUVE WALLFLOWER)

It is a shame this plant is not used more. It is one of the first to bloom in the spring and looks great with columbines.

EUPHORBIA LATHYRUS (GOPHER PURGE)

This biennial contains toxins that inhibit burrowing animals. To protect a garden, surround it with a 3 ft. wide band of plants. Self sows readily so your army of gopher plants can be cultivated from a modest planting of parents. Move small plants to desired location. Poisonous.

FOENICULUM VULGARE CV. (BRONZE FENNEL)

Similar to Wild Fennel but with a dark bronze tint to its leaves. Seeds can be eaten plain like candy.
